Children Introduced to SSbD of Materials at European Researchers’ Night

The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) concept starts at the very earliest stages of the design process – so why not plant the seeds early with the researchers and consumers of the future? 😊

On 26 September 2025, BNN had a hands-on station at European Researchers’ Night, held as “Life is Science” at Universalmuseum Joanneum in the city center. Organized by BioNanoNet Association member acib, Life in Science was Austria’s only ERN event this year!

Amid a sea of fascinating stations in the lobby of the museum complex, BNN asked visitors to reach inside our “magic box” to see if they can recognize any objects inside simply by feeling and not looking. Children were asked to describe the materials and write their descriptions on our board. Then, after learning the basic concepts of SSbD – thinking of safety and sustainability over the entire life cycle of a material or product – those who were interested wrote down suggestions for improving safety and sustainability of materials to decorate our tree. We were thrilled with the results!

We then explained to parents and other adults attending about how we apply the SSbD  framework in projects such as NABIHEAL (showing examples of bandages and other wound-healing materials in our box), PLANETS (using examples of baby spoons with plasticizers as well as materials with flame retardants), SSbD4CheM (using examples of Matchbox cars!). We also talked about ATIMA and InnoMatSyn, our projects in advanced/innovative materials (AdMa) in Austria and Europe, respectively.

We were thrilled to have roughly 60 people participating in our hands-on activity at an event with 750 visitors!

PLANETS featured in BNN QUARTERLY (Sept 2025)

PLANETS was included in the latest BNN QUARTERLY 03/2025 entitled “Scientific Impact on Clean Manufacturing Solutions” with four articles:

  • BNN Leads SSbD Workshop for Highschoolers
  • PLANETS SSbD Wordbook
  • Explore PLANETS’ Latest Training Materials
  • Recap from the SSbD Scenarios Workshop

The issue also advertised the upcoming 2nd NSC/PLANETS workshop on SSbD scenarios for advanced materials, and ANTHOS’26!

Save the date for the Venice Training School

PLANETS is proud to be a co-organizing project at the 13th Venice Training School! Save the date from 9-13 June 2025 for 5 days of intensive training on functional, safe and sustainable advanced materials!

Following a long tradition, the prestigious Venice Training School celebrates its 13th edition in June 2025. This year it is located at Auditorio Santa Margareta in Venice, Italy.

PLANETS at the Venice Training School

Co-organized by several EU funded projects including PLANETS, the Venice Training School marks one of the key events on safe and sustainable advanced materials next year.

During the Training School, we will take an in-depth look at the application of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design in early, mid and late stages of innovation – and what it takes to put theory into practice.

5th Stakeholder Workshop on SSbD

On 5 December 2024, PLANETS was represented in Brussels by Simon Clavaguera of CEA at the 5th Stakeholder workshop on “Safe and sustainable by design”, held by the Joint Research Center.

PLANETS partners Wouter Fransman of TNO and Wendel Wohlleben of BASF were also present, while other partners attended online.

The main focus of the workshop was on the outcomes of the second reporting period of the SSbD framework, the lessons learnt and the ways forward before the revision of the framework in 2025.

PLANETS kicks off in Grenoble

Members of the scientific community from 18 partner organizations met at Minatec in Grenoble from 26-27 November 2024 to launch the Horizon Europe project PLANETS.

PLANETS stands for “Plasticizers, fLame-retardants and surfactANts: new alternatives validating the safE and susTainable by deSign approach” and is funded under the Topic HORIZON-CL4-2024-RESILIENCE-01-24.

The consortium will receive 14.5 million Euros from the European Union’s research and innovation programme to demonstrate the applicability of the SSbD Draft Framework published by the JRC while technically developing alternatives for 3 of the most important classes of molecules in chemical industries: plasticizers, flame retardants and surfactants.

The new molecules and products developed by PLANETS will be significantly safer to workers and consumers and will have considerably lower environmental impact, while ensuring economic viability and social awareness.

This ambitious project, coordinated by Commissariat a l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives (CEA), which hosted the Kick-Off Meeting, brings together 18 complementary partners from 7 countries, including 7 large industry partners (BASF, Chemische Fabrik Budenheim KG, ELKEM Silicones, Greenchemicals Srl, Steinbacher Dämmstoff GmbH, SYENSQO, Wacker Chemie AG), 3 SMEs (RINA Consulting, STERNA, QSAR Lab), 5 RTOs (AIMEN Technology Center, CEA, TNO, IPC, Fraunhofer ICT) and 3 non-profit research organizations (BioNanoNet Forschungsgesellschaft mbH, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg, Radboud University). These partners bring the expertise required for the entire project development, including:

  • Development of safer and more sustainable alternatives through SSbD assessments in a tiered approach
  • Demonstration of the integration of the new molecules for the manufacturing of new products for various applications (coating, insulation foams and childcare articles)
  • Social and humanities sciences
  • Business plans and market uptake approaches
  • Digital Product Passport
  • Identification of new skills and training
  • Interactions with appropriate stakeholders and citizens and feedback to JRC and the EC.

PLANETS aims to significantly contribute to paving the way for the adoption of the SSbD framework while proposing a roadmap towards industrialisation and market uptake of the alternative solutions.
