About Fraunhofer ICT
In our research we focus on the scalability of processes, and on the transfer of research results from laboratory to pilot-plant scale, and in some cases to pre-series application. 536 people are currently employed at Fraunhofer ICT who carry out research and development in our core competences of Chemical Processes, Polymer Engineering, Energy and Drive Systems, and Explosives Technology, Safety and Security.
The use of wind energy, and also photovoltaics in the near future, allows us to operate our main campus with a decreasing carbon footprint. This campus comprises over 100 laboratories, pilot plants and test centers on 21 hectares of land in Pfinztal, near Karlsruhe.
Our customers and project partners include chemical companies, automotive, aviation, construction, and plastics processing industry, recycling companies, companies in the energy and environmental sectors, and customers with safety-related issues.
Fraunhofer ICT’s role in PLANETS
In PLANETS, Fraunhofer ICT leads Work Package 4: SSbD Alternatives for Flame Retardant Application. Several classes of flame retardants and flame retardant formulations will be chemically optimized, tested, and upscaled by Fraunhofer ICT.
Together with flame retardant developments from the PLANETS partners, these flame retardants will be used by Fraunhofer ICT as flame retardant alternatives for material formulations and process developments of extruded polyethylene foam (XPE), polystyrene bead foam (EPS) and polyurethane rigid foam (PU).
